Why does the area in some designs show up shaded in some prints and not others? Is there a way to turn this off?

I couldn't find anything related to your inquiry on the websites that I've visited through Google Search. Based on the information found, I believe this is now a discontinued application. No manual could be found as well to consult it which means that the only thing available is the built-in Help section. You have to use that to find the correct information about areas within the software.
Sometimes developers add help information in the installation directory in form of PDF and CHM files. You can check there as well.
